MEP Awards 2016: Arabian MEP wins retrofit prize

The contractor transformed the athletes’ village of the 2006 Asian Games in Doha into the Hamad Medical City

Arabian MEP walked away with the Retrofit Project of the Year for transforming the use of the athletes’ village of the 2006 Asian Games in Doha into the Hamad Medical City.

The 35 hectare-site now includes three specialised hospitals of more than 700 beds, accommodation for 2,500 nurses, staff accommodation for 1,600 individuals and 200 families.

Judges were impressed by the attention to detail paid by Arabian MEP.

One judge said that the project on such a vast scale was fraught with challenges which were “evidently overcome with disciplined process and organisation to reveal a successful result.”

Judges also noted how the company had utilised existing structures to minimise the use of natural resources and lessen demolition works.

CEO and co-founder Vasanth Kumar accepted the award and emphasised how important quality was to a vital institution such as a hospital.

He said: “I feel excited and thrilled. It’s so great that the judges recognised what we have achieved because, to me, this was a great project, it was unique, in fact it was an epic project. It is also important for the region and shows how forward thinking Qatar is.

“Retrofit projects are always challenging but I would like to thank both the clients and contractors for, firstly, giving us the opportunity and, secondly, for carrying the project through to completion.

“The project is also very sustainable as it utilises an existing structure and I think can act as a benchmark for the region.

“But, most importantly, on healthcare you cannot compromise when it comes to quality.”
