Masdar's second solar power project in Mauritania has been completed.

Masdar has recently completed its second solar power project in Mauritania, meeting up to 30% of the demand for rural communities with eight individual solar photovoltaic (PV) plants, it said on Sunday.

With the completion of the new project, the Abu Dhabi-based clean energy company has doubled the amount of power the UAE provides to the African nation.

Sultan Al Jaber, the UAE Minister of State and chairman of Masdar, in a statement: "The eight projects bring economic and social benefits to Mauritania, providing opportunities for training and knowledge exchange and creating the foundations for long-term growth and development to the local community.”

Combined with Masdar’s first 15MW solar PV project, these two projects will provide electricity to about 39,000 homes, The National reported.

Masdar broke ground on the project in December last year, an endeavour which will ultimately help reduce citizens’ dependency on diesel-fuelled generators.

Mauritanian national electricity provider Société Mauritanienne d’electricité (Somelec) selected Masdar as the preferred partner for the project based on the successful delivery of the 15 MW Sheikh Zayed Solar Power Plant in the capital city of Nouakchott.
