Al Maryah Tower, nominated by DeSimone Consulting Engineers, was crowned Commercial Project of the Year at the Construction Week Awards 2016.

The development offers grade-A office space with column-free interiors and generous cantilever spans, and occupies one of Abu Dhabi’s deepest-excavated sites.

CW’s panel of industry judges praised the development for its efficient floor plan, and the innovative structural system that was employed to facilitate column shifting.

One panellist commended the project’s clever and lean engineering.

Commenting on the win, Ahmed Osman, managing principal from DeSimone Consulting Engineers, said: "We are very happy to win this award. This has definitely put a lot of pressure on us for the next year to do more good work and get more awards. We thank Construction Week for the recognition because it gave us motivation to do better."

Having an efficient design for a Class A office space contributed to the win, Osman noted. "It's a very efficient design; we have used less materials to offer owners big and open space.

"We will continue to work hard and do the good job that we have done over the years to serve the people."

Also, Etihad Museum, nominated by ASGC, was named this year’s highly commended commercial project.

Other shortlisted nominations included United Real Estate Company’s (URC) Abdali Mall; GUtech Oman’s Conference and Exhibition Hall, which was nominated by Hoehler + alSalmy; Cranleigh Abu Dhabi, nominated by Aecom; and Doha Festival City, nominated by Faithful+Gould.

An independent panel of seven judges, made up from industry professionals from across the GCC and throughout the construction sector, selected winners in 14 categories at the CW Awards 2016.

The event was supported by Platinum Sponsor FAMCO; Gold Sponsors ALEC, ASGC, Faithful+Gould, and Parsons; Silver Sponsors Aconex and Al Manader Road Contracting; Category Sponsors Atkins, Construction Computer Software (CCS), Kone, Multiplex, National Engineering Bureau (NEB), Projacs, Ramboll, and Soprema; Official Aluminium Extruder National Aluminium Products Company Oman (NAPCO); and Social Media Partner WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff.
