The world’s first 3D printed pedestrian bridge has been constructed in an urban park in the central Spanish region of Castilla-La Mancha.

The structure was designed by the Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia who say it is intended to reflect natural forms It has a total length of 12m and a width of 1.75m, seeks to demonstrate that 3D printing can be utilised for creating outdoor structures.

Developed through parametric design, this approach optimises the distribution of materials and minimises the amount of waste by recycling raw material during manufacture.

The computational design also maximised structural performance, as it used the micro-reinforced concrete only where it is needed.
