MAN Truck & Bus, which last year initiated the very first safety campaign for commercial vehicles with Abu Dhabi police, in partnership with Road Safety UAE, is continuing to promote the theme of safety in 2017 with respect to the importance of genuine OEM parts.

Among the points raised at the MAN and Road Safety at the time were the dangers of speeding and driving while tired, and the need for stricter enforcement of laws as a crucial step towards reducing accidents resulting in severe or fatal injuries.

MAN also took the opportunity to voice its support for the introduction of mandatory specifications for trucks, pointing to the fact that the quality of the tyres and brakes, as well as the quality of maintenance and repairs, can also affect how much road space a heavy vehicle needs to come to a complete stop.

Franz Freiherr von Redwitz, managing director of MAN Truck & Bus Middle East, explains: “Whoever decides on the purchase of a commercial vehicle from MAN associates maximum expectations of quality, performance, safety and longevity with the decision.

"This is justified by the fact that MAN repeatedly occupies the top spots in national reports (e.g., the TÜV report for Germany) in the category of “lowest percentage of faults”.

“There’s no doubt non-OEM parts cost less compared to original parts. However, these lower prices can usually only be achieved by cutting corners in terms of quality and safety standards. Grey market manufacturers tend to get duplicate parts from unnamed producers in low-wage countries.”

As soon as the supply chain becomes murky, Von Redwitz notes, it becomes highly unlikely that the parts being sold will have been subjected to quality and endurance tests, and this constitutes a safety risk for the vehicle and driver.

In most cases, he adds, these producers will simply not have an in-depth understanding of the specifications and requirements of the genuine parts. Instead, many aftermarket companies reverse-engineer the genuine parts and present customers with a replicated product made of lower quality materials.

Von Redwitz continues: “As an OEM vehicle producer, MAN works exclusively with globally recognised suppliers that manufacture the OEM’s parts subject to demanding specifications.

"Spare parts only get an item number once they have undergone and successfully completed MAN endurance and laboratory tests. Only a genuine part can guarantee the perfect fit, the best quality and maximum efficiency and service life.”

Genuine parts also remove any need for doubt for both the OEM and the customer. Indeed, MAN is sufficiently sure in its quality controls that its genuine parts are all backed with an international spare parts warranty.

Von Redwitz adds: “The aim of MAN is to provide the very best quality when it comes to genuine parts, as in all other parts of our business, so that customers’ vehicles are safe, efficient and will retain their value. Our service outlets work exclusively with MAN genuine parts to ensure we fulfil our promise of quality and the service life of the vehicles.”
