Five minutes with Stephen Beesley, Transguard
Stephen Beesley, COO – Integrated Facility Services, Transguard Group
What does your role involve?
As the chief operating officer [for Integrated Facilities Services], I’m responsible for the development and delivery of the vision and strategy for Transguard’s Integrated Facility Services business. On a day-to-day basis, I am heavily involved in developing FM solutions for new and potential clients for Transguard and managing FM operations [for ongoing contracts]. We work with more than 11,000 employees across the UAE for our FM operations.
What do you love most about your job?
I enjoy the varying nature of the role. At Transguard, we encourage people to be entrepreneurial and this can often lead to us developing and delivering solutions that may not typically fall into [the bracket of] facility management but can be great fun for all those involved. Although we are a firm of significant size, we have maintained a family feel and I enjoy the camaraderie across the teams.
What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
Convincing clients to be hands-off and trust their FM partner with output specifications and more strategic relationships continues to be a challenge, but this is starting to change. With more than 75% revenue growth this year, keeping pace with our success has been a challenge too, but we have come through successfully.
What has been your most memorable project so far?
Earlier this year we mobilised our first truly integrated facility services contract with a [renowned] UAE bank. This was a key milestone for Transguard and going forward provides us with a credible case study to demonstrate the benefit of integrating and self-delivering a significant number of services where we have full responsibility for the management of a large portfolio of premises across the UAE.
Where do you see the FM industry in five years?
With organisations such as ours leading the way in reshaping how FM is delivered across the UAE, I would expect the country’s FM market to align itself further to the UK’s in terms of contractual approach and level of service delivery. In addition, I would expect to see further development of technology in FM, with more advanced use of computer aided FM (CAFM), mobile solutions, apps, and sensor technology.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
Since my time spent working in Asia, my passion has been Muay Thai, a form of kickboxing, and I manage to find the time to continue my training here in Dubai. Since we’re currently in the winter season, I participate in endurance races almost weekly.
