Al-Futtaim Motors (AFM) celebrated Earth Hour by highlighting that the fuel savings from the cumulative sales of Toyota hybrid cars around the world is enough for 1.5 million trips between the earth and the moon.

The message was spelled out in candles by AFM associates during the celebration of Earth Hour on Saturday, 25 March, while the company’s showroom lights were switched off from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.

Toyota Motor Corporation earlier announced that the cumulative global sales of its hybrid vehicles had reached 10.05 million units, resulting in approximately 77 million fewer tonnes of CO2 emissions and the saving approximately 29 million kilolitres of fuel.

Yousuf Al Raeesi, AFM director for HSE, said: “In line with the UAE vision 2021 that focuses among other priorities on improving air quality, Al-Futtaim Motors has been leading the sustainable transport journey for over 6 years now, with an ever increasing hybrid line-up across our brands.”

“I’d like to reiterate how hybrid cars are an affordable transport solution that have a direct positive impact on the environment and pose no changes on the driver’s behaviour, as they require no external charging and can drive over long ranges, just like conventional cars.”

Earth Hour is a climate change initiative by ‘WWF-World Wide Fund for Nature’ that invites communities, businesses and governments to switch off their lights for one hour to send a global message about the need to reduce energy consumption.

Earlier in the month, Al-Futtaim Motors also supported the Emirates Wildlife Society-WWF’s (EWS-WWF) efforts to encourage sustainable development in the UAE by donating a Toyota Prius to the organisation, in the spirit of the celebration of 2017 as a ‘Year of Giving’ in the country.

In January, Al-Futtaim Motors also announced that it had begun trials of the Toyota Mirai fuel cell vehicle (FCV) in the UAE, supported by hydrogen filling stations provided by France's Air Liquide.
