Oman: Siemens completes overhaul of power project

Siemens has completed an overhaul project for two SGT5-4000F gas turbines at Sohar 2 and Barka 3 combined cycle power plants in Oman, according to Muscat Daily

Siemens has completed an overhaul project for two SGT5-4000F gas turbines at Sohar 2 and Barka 3 combined cycle power plants in Oman, according to Muscat Daily.

The company has also finalised major outage inspection services for the Ansaldo AE94.2 gas turbine at the Barka 2 power plant. The three facilities are operated by Suez-Tractebel Operation and Maintenance Oman (ENGIE STOMO). The projects are the latest in a series of orders showcasing Siemens’ capabilities as a total solutions provider for plants’ operators in the region.

Periodically, all gas turbines need an overhaul to ensure an operational power plant enjoys greater flexibility, availability and improved efficiency. For the project, Siemens was able to complete extensive overall works at the plants in a month to meet the rising power demand during the summer season. Each outage project involved more than 100 personnel from Siemens field service team as well as local sub suppliers to maximise the added-value of the project, while ensuring the know-how transfer, a press release said.

“We chose Siemens to help us increase the efficiency and reliability of our power assets following the shortest possible inspection and overhaul outage,” said Mike Maudsley, general manager of ENGIE STOMO, Oman.

Sohar 2 and Barka 3 power plants, equipped with Siemens SGT5-4000F gas turbines, are located at the Sohar industrial park and in the vicinity of Muscat, respectively. Siemens and its consortium partner GS E&C commissioned the two turnkey combined-cycle power plants (CCPPs) in 2012 in simple-cycle mode. Following steam turbine add-ons, both plants commenced commercial operation in combined-cycle configuration in 2013 with a total capacity of 1.5GW.

This project is an example of our capability to improve the life-cycle performance of power generation equipment, whether it was manufactured by Siemens or other OEMs,” said Gianluigi Di Giovanni, senior vice president of Siemens Power Generation Services in the Middle East.

As a key contributor to major power projects in Oman, our technology is currently responsible for generating over 50% of Oman’s electricity. Siemens has been a key contributor to Oman’s infrastructure since 1972. The company’s technology has enabled Oman to conserve its valuable natural resources.
