UAE: Imkan to develop 18ha community in Abu Dhabi
Imkan has announced plans to develop Makers District, an 18ha mixed-use development that will be located on Abu Dhabi’s Reem Island
Imkan has announced plans to develop its first project, Makers District.
Located on Abu Dhabi’s Reem Island, Makers District is an 18ha master-planned development that will feature residential, hospitality, commercial, and retail elements.
Imkan has appointed Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), MVRDV, and 10 Design to design Phase 1 of the waterfront project.
The UAE-headquartered real estate developer stated that, in the longer term, it plans to roll out the Makers District concept in Brazil, Egypt, Montenegro, Morocco, and the UK.
Speaking at Cityscape Abu Dhabi, Walid El Hindi, chief executive officer of Imkan, said: “Imkan is setting out to create a dynamic, integrated, and engaging community that captures the collaborative spirit of the maker movement.
“This journey begins with The-Artery, which will be a regional creative powerhouse in the heart of Abu Dhabi.”
The centrepiece of Makers District, The-Artery is the first building to be unveiled by Imkan. Spanning 26,000m2, the multi-use building will feature a space to showcase art, and a parking garage.
BIG, an architecture firm based out of Denmark and the US, has been awarded the design contract for Makers District’s The-Artery. Netherlands-headquartered MVRDV and Hong Kong-based 10 Design will also be involved in Phase 1 of the development.
“Imkan is committed to creating soulful places that enrich people’s lives, both in the UAE and overseas,” said El Hindi.
“As we make progress with the Makers District [in] Abu Dhabi, our intention is to roll out the concept in Egypt, Brazil, Morocco, the UK, and Montenegro,” he added.
Construction of The-Artery is expected to start later this year. Makers District is scheduled to be operational by 2020, according to Imkan.
