Dubai Municipality has announced amendments to engineer licensing procedures in the emirate.

A central electronic system will be established to carry out technical tests of engineers working in Dubai and issue their approval certificates.

The engineers' qualification system will also be linked electronically with the UAE's association of engineers.

A decision was issued by Eng Hussain Nasser Lootah, director-general of Dubai Municipality, to qualify engineers working in Dubai's construction sector.

Under the new system, the municipality's Buildings Department will approve the technical standards for the qualification of engineers based on Local Order No. 3 of 1999 on the organisation of construction work in Dubai.

The decision also stipulates that the Buildings Department establish the conditions and requirements for the registration of assistant engineers and similarly positioned employees in the electronic system.

This system will be popularised "with consulting offices and contractors to settle their positions, in accordance with the provisions of this resolution, within one month from the date of its implementation", the municipality added in a statement.
