HKR Architects has been appointed by Proton Partners International Healthcare Investments LLC to design the first proton beam therapy clinic in the UAE.

The Proton Clinic will be connected to the existing Gulf International Cancer centre in Al Shahama area in Abu Dhabi.

Proton Beam Therapy is considered the most advanced and targeted cancer radiotherapy treatment, limiting the collateral damage of radiation to other vital organs in the body and lowering the risk of side effects.

Facilities within the building include a café, anaesthetic rooms, treatment rooms, tranquil gardens to aid recovery of cancer patients, dosimetry, conference rooms and offices for consulting specialists, landscaping and additional parking.

The building will integrate energy efficient technologies, such as shading structures and mashrabiya, to offset the costs associated with cooling demand.

It will also include the introduction of a new Linear accelerator (LINAC) as an extension of the Gulf international cancer centre in Abu Dhabi.

Kola Ojeyomi, director of HKR Architects said: “We are extremely pleased to be part of such an exciting project in the UAE.  This redevelopment brings an exciting opportunity to annunciate the facility as a world-stage medical centre in the treatment of cancer illnesses – a building of both local and national importance.”

The centre will have the IBA recently developed compact Proton Therapy (PT) solution named Proteus®ONE and will appear as a single new integrated facility, linked by a new exo-skeletal veil.

HKR’s approach to the design of the clinic focuses on creating treatment environments that give patients a more positive outlook to life, with adaptable new technologies tailor made to cater for patient’s needs.

Dr. Mahdi Al Fardan, chairman of Proton Partners International Healthcare Investments LLC, added: “This Centre will bring a state of the art cancer treatment facility to the UAE for the benefit of all its citizens.”

The centre will be the first to offer high energy proton beam therapy in the UAE. In addition to proton beam therapy, the centre will offer radiotherapy, chemotherapy, imaging and wellbeing services.

Proton Partners International Healthcare Investments LLC works with internationally renowned healthcare technology partners, including Philips, IBA, and Electa to ensure that the centre is equipped to the highest specification.
