Video: Geotechnics expert on sustainability in foundation design

Prof Harry Poulos of Coffey says geotechnical engineers in Dubai need to rethink their overly conservative approach to foundation design for the sake of sustainability

Geotechnical engineers in Dubai have a tendency to be overly conservative when it comes to foundation design.

Sharing this observation with Construction Week on the sidelines of the International Conference on Recent Developments and Innovations in Geotechnics and High-rise Structures, Prof Harry Poulos, senior consultant at Coffey, said that a less conservative approach to geotechnics would mean less use of concrete and less carbon emissions.

Poulus was one of the speakers at the conference, which was organised by Dubai Creative Clusters Authority (DCCA) and Midas IT from 16 to 18 May, 2017.

For more of Poulos's insights about sustainability in foundation design, check out the video below, as well as the analysis piece on geotechnics in issue 657 of Construction Week, published on 27 May, 2017.
