Overdue payments are a significant threat to vendor operations, Khaled Amin, executive manager of Acrow UAE, tells ConstructionWeekOnline.

In the following interview, Amin highlights the key trends and challenges currently prevalent in the GCC's formwork sector, and how Acrow is adapting its operation to meet market requirements.

What is the scope of your formwork operation in the GCC?

Acrow provides a range of products to cover all kinds of projects, including special and architectural ones that might need special solutions, which is [typically] the biggest challenge for formwork companies.

The firm has introduced the Acrow Truss system, used for traffic gantries and other applications, and we are saving cost and time through this system's implementation.

The new Acrow Heavy Duty Truss System (HD) is mainly used as a gantry for bridges crossing obstacles like traffic lanes, watercourses, and bridges, and can work for spans up to 40m, with depths varying, according to requirements, from 90cm to 4m.

The system can be used for permanent or temporary bridges or other heavy structures, and as strong backs behind vertical concrete elements too, like one-sided wall formwork.

We've also recently introduced a newly developed automatic climbing system for high-rise buildings and pylons, in addition to our new heavy-duty shoring system, which has been developed from our standard products.

Which are some of the key projects that Acrow has worked on?

We have an extensive portfolio in the MENA region.

Our list of projects in the GCC alone includes the Abu Dhabi-Dubai Road E311, and the upgrade of junctions at Dubai Airport road in the UAE, and in Oman, the Mahdah Al-Rawdah road, New Muscat International Airport, and Palm Mall.

What are the key challenges to look out for while providing formwork services in the GCC?

The biggest threat faced by vendors is overdue payments, which [also] affects the progress of the construction industry.

After-sales service and availability of materials are also huge problems in the formwork market.

How is Acrow meeting market challenges and requirements through its services?

In the GCC, a lot of formwork companies are [currently] struggling to serve projects.

At Acrow, we are concentrating on after-sales services for the whole duration of the project through our team of engineers.

Our expert engineers are always available to reply to any inquiries and provide assistance for special designs.
