STTS has awarded a design-and-build (D&B) contract to Aircraft Support Industries (ASI) for the development of a wide-body painting hangar in Dubai South.

The value of the contract is approximately $26m (AED95.5m), and the project is scheduled to complete in January 2019.

Located at Al Maktoum International Airport, the STTS facility will be large enough to accommodate all types of commercial wide-body aircraft, including Airbus A350s and A380s, and Boeing 777s and 787s.

The aircraft-painting company will use the hanger for maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) activities.

Commenting on the contract award, Cristophe Cador, president of STTS, said: “I am proud of this facility launch and its level of quality.

“I am confident that ASI will do its utmost to meet our expectations, and enable us to soon deliver painting services of the highest standards to operators in the region.”

The project will involve the development of approximately 6,000m2 of hangar space, and 1,600m2 of offices and workshops.

The facility’s features will include temperature and humidity control; regulated waste management and air emissions; and hangar volume optimisation, which should serve to reduce energy consumption.

The project’s master plan also allows for the future development of a narrow-body painting hangar on the same plot.

The Dubai South facility will be STTS’s first hangar in the Middle East.
