Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has passed the 77% completion mark on Sustainability, a substation it is implementing for Expo 2020 Dubai.

Sustainability has a conversion capacity of 150 megavolt-amperes (MVA), and is expected to be operational by the end of October this year.

In a statement, DEWA said that the project’s total value, which covers the cost of the plant and the 132kV cables, is estimated at $28m (AED103m).

Sustainability is one of the three 132/11kV substations the authority is building to meet the anticipated energy requirements of the Expo. The other two substations are called Mobility and Opportunity, with all three being named after the sub-themes of the event.

The total cost of the projects is estimated at $114.3m (AED420m).

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and chief executive officer of DEWA, commented: “As part of our commitment to provide [an] energy infrastructure that meets all the needs of sustainable development in the emirate, we have allocated $1.16bn (AED4.26bn).”

DEWA signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Expo 2020 Dubai in March this year to become the event’s official sustainable energy partner.

Through the Shams Dubai initiative, DEWA said that it will be supplying power from solar arrays installed on Expo 2020 buildings, and electric vehicle charging stations through the Green Charger initiative.

The authority also has plans to develop smart grids within the exhibition, through its Smart Applications and Smart Meters initiative, to cover generation, transmission, and distribution systems.
