Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) is working to make sure that the UAE’s first nuclear power plant can withstand threats to its cybersecurity.

Mohammed Al Hammadi, ENEC chief executive officer, said that the company is committed to meeting the highest standards when it comes to cybersecurity, adding that Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant is compliant with the cybersecurity regulations that have been laid out by the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) of the UAE.

FANR regulations, he noted, are tailored after the best global standards.

“We are also working with National Electronic Security Agency (NESA); [we’re in] very close cooperation with them,” said Al Hammadi, noting that ENEC has multiple data centres and data-centre backups for the Barakah plant.

Cybersecurity is presently a hot topic for both the public and private sectors owing to a recent spate of cyberattacks that affected companies and institutions around the world. And experts are saying that cyber threats will only continue, with Cybersecurity Ventures reporting that damage caused by cybercrime will likely hit $6tn by 2021.

Al Hammadi made his statements during a round-table discussion with members of the press on 25 July, 2017.

During the meeting, the ENEC chief also noted that Unit 1 of the plant is already 96% complete and is expected to become operational by next year, although no specific date has been set yet.
