Dubai, Saudi top list of most hotel rooms under construction

A total of 123,589 hotel rooms are currently under construction in the Middle East, according to a report.

The region accounts for about 95,089 rooms out of the total number of rooms under construction, up 14.3% in year-over-year (y-o-y) comparisons, said STR's July 2017 Pipeline Report, according to Hotelier Middle East.

Dubai topped the list with the largest number of rooms under construction with 23,816 rooms in 18 hotels.

Saudi Arabia comes in second with 23,816 rooms in 18 projects in Makkah and 6,712 rooms in 30 projects in Riyadh.

The kingdom is planning to open a record 68 new hotels, comprising 29,033 guestrooms, during the course of this year, according to a report published by Tophotelprojects.

Earlier reports forecasts that the Middle East’s hospitality pipeline will hit 158,950 rooms, spread across 541 hotels, by 2020.
