The Ministry of Infrastructure Development in the UAE has developed an index to asses and measure the condition of bridges across the country.

Developed in collaboration with the University of Sharjah, the "Advanced Bridge Condition Assessment Index" ensures periodical inspection of bridges using algorithms to determine the need for maintenance.

Ahmed Al Hammadi, director of the Road Department at the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, said: "The data received through the new index will feed the Road Asset Management System, ICARO, according to which priorities of maintenance are set.

"The results to be delivered by the innovative index will play a significant role in determining the use of building material in roads constructed at the federal level nationwide in accordance with best international practices and standards," he added.

The UAE recently came in first for the fourth year running in the Road Quality Category of the Global Competitiveness Report 2016–2017, published by the Davos World Economic Forum.
