WHAT IS THE SAINT-GOBAIN GYPROC MIDDLE EAST TROPHY?
As the world’s leading manufacturer and supplier of sustainable, innovative, lightweight interior building systems, Saint-Gobain Gyproc sets the standard for dry lining through long-standing collaborations with dry-lining contracting professionals to ensure the standards are upheld and improved, year on year.
To recognise the skills of these contractor teams, Gyproc Middle East is introducing the first ever Saint-Gobain Gyproc Middle East Trophy Awards – a unique event aimed at recognising and awarding the craftsmanship and workmanship of our contracting customers in the Middle East dry-lining industry.
The inaugural event will see almost 50 high-profile projects form across the Middle East compete in five categories. The highlight of this specialist trade competition will be the announcement and honouring of the winners during a glitzy and glamorous gala dinner at a five-star hotel in Dubai.
The categories include...
2. Innovation and sustainability
The event aims to demonstrate how modern plasterboard systems can be used to provide superior living and working environments through high-quality installation and workmanship. It will set and drive industry standards, highlight and recognise the dry-lining profession, showcase the skills of dry-lining contractors, feature high-profile projects using modern Gyproc plasterboard systems and products, and continue to innovate in order to meet market needs for high-quality, safe, and sustainable interior systems. In summary, the event will celebrate the shared successes we’ve built with our customers over the years, as demonstrated by the 50 nominated projects.

The projects are pre-selected, and will be judged by an expert jury of distinguished industry professionals from across the Middle East. All participants will be invited to the trophy event, wherein all submissions will be presented and the winners will be awarded. For the first time ever, the winners of individual categories will automatically qualify* for the 11th International Saint-Gobain Gyproc Trophy, which will be held in Lisbon, Portugal in March 2018.

THE JURY AND JUDGING CRITERIA
The 50 projects nominated for the Saint-Gobain Gyproc Middle East Trophy will be scored by an independent jury. Selected based on their experience within the construction industry, the judges will consider technical skills, craftsmanship, and aesthetic criteria of dry-wall contractors, in addition to the overall performance of the systems and solutions implemented during the course of the projects.
THREE MAIN JUDGING AREAS
1. Craftsmanship – emphasis on quality of workmanship
2. Contractor’s influence – to encourage the use of gypsum products, as well as other Saint-Gobain solutions
3. Overall project – looking at the quality of the whole building or project, in terms of wellbeing and sustainability
PREVIOUS AWARD NOMINEES FROM THE MIDDLE EAST
High-profile projects from around the Middle East have been nominated in the past three global trophy events, held in London (2012), Berlin (2014), and Prague (2016).
Mafraq Hospital, located in Abu Dhabi, UAE, won the President’s Prize Award at the 9th International Saint-Gobain Gyproc Trophy, which took place in Berlin, Germany in 2014. Established in 1983, the hospital underwent a major $870m expansion, which saw Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) triple the number of rooms to 690 beds – sufficient to cover the city’s demand until post-2018. Today, the site spans an area of 306,803m2, and boasts a built-up area of 246,118m2 across four patient towers of 10 to 12 storeys. The facility is home to two royal suites and 32 VVIP suites.
The original hospital, which is among the oldest in Abu Dhabi, will benefit from the new energy-efficient building addition through wastewater recycling, fibre-optical interior sun lighting, and solar panels – not to mention the regeneration of the site.
In scoring the nomination, one judge commented: “[Mafraq Hospital] is a great example of a project where the contractor and specification teams worked closely to achieve an impressive end result.
