Emaar Hospitality Group has signed a hotel management contract to operate Address Madivaru Maldives Resort + Spa, signalling its expansion to South Asia.

The property is a beachfront resort set in a private island in the Indian Ocean, some 20 minutes by seaplane from Male International Airport, the hospitality and leisure arm of UAE-based developer, Emaar Properties, said in a statement.

According to the group, it is expecting the Maldives resort to be operational by 2020. It will be the first island hotel project that will carry Emaar’s Address Hotels + Resorts brand.

Spanning 75,000m2, Address Madivaru Maldives Resort + Spa will comprise 80 villas, including selected units for sale. It will also feature floating restaurants and lounges, over-water fitness facilities, swimming pools, and children’s play areas, among other amenities.

The resort will be part of the 242ha Ethere Madivaru Private Island, owned by Adam Abdul Gafoor, who is the chairman of Finolhu Investment.

Commenting on the announcement, Gafoor, said: “We are delighted to welcome Emaar Hospitality Group’s Address brand to Maldives to manage our property, which will complement our nation’s focus on tourism growth.

“Maldives has been the cornerstone of Indian Ocean tourism, and the government has announced visionary initiatives to drive the role of the private sector, including the long-term lease of islands for resort development.”

Olivier Harnisch, chief executive officer of Emaar Hospitality, added: “One of the world’s most popular holiday destinations, Maldives is an ideal fit to our expansion plans to take our proven competencies in hospitality to newer geographies.

“It is our privilege to have been chosen by Finolhu Investment to manage this property in the Indian Ocean. We will work closely in the design and development of the hotel project, with a focus on maximising its oceanfront location.”

The Maldives project is Emaar’s 29th upcoming hotel project and the 21st under the Address brand.

The group’s other upcoming international projects under the brand are Jabal Omar Address Makkah in Saudi Arabia; Address Marassi Golf Resort + Spa and Address Marassi Beach Resort in Egypt; Address Istanbul and Address Residences Emaar Square Istanbul in Turkey; and Address Marassi Al Bahrain.
