UAE-headquartered port operator, DP World, has announced that it will donate $2m (AED7.3m) to help Somaliland improve water availability and healthcare access in Berbera.

Under the terms of the agreement that DP World signed with the Somaliland government, the port operator will drill four water wells in Berbera and three outside the Sahil region, Dubai Media Office reported.

According to DP World, the donation will also cover refurbishments to the Berbera General Hospital and the Berbera Mental Hospital to ensure that residents have adequate access to medical facilities.

DP World’s other initiatives in Somaliland include sponsorship of 11 schools, a maritime education academy, two hospitals, and a clinic. The company has also donated litres of water to the drought committee in Berbera and supplied 3,000 families with food provisions.

The port operator’s projects in Somaliland are in line with the United Nation’s 17 goals for sustainable development, which encompass issues like climate change, access to potable water, hunger, health, and education, Dubai Media Office added.

Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, group chairman and chief executive officer of DP World, commented: “The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals fit with our intention to work in a sustainable and responsible way, especially our commitment to minimise impact on our environment and to build vibrant, secure, and resilient societies.

“This support for Berbera is part of our commitment to help develop the areas in which we operate, and we are confident that our donation will have important benefits for many people across the region. We look forward to continuing to work closely with the Somaliland authorities and local people to improve people’s quality of life through key infrastructure and sustainability projects.”

In September last year, DP World won a 30-year concession to implement a multipurpose project at the Port of Berbera.
