Jordan has completed a preliminary comprehensive design to build a new capital city in the kingdom, the government announced on Sunday.

Jordan’s Prime Minister Hani Mulki said that the “new Amman city” will not be attached or connected to the current capital, The Jordan Times reported.

"We found the solution to address several pressing issues in Amman; we will create a new Amman city. This project will be offered for implementation on the basis of Build, Operate and Transfer next year," he said during a media briefing.

He added that the project will be constructed over five phases, but did not disclose its location.

As the new administrative capital of Jordan, the city will include government buildings and will aim to ‘renovate and modernise’ the governorate.

Earlier this month, Aecom was awarded a lead design contract for Phase 1 of Jordan’s King Hussein Medical City (KHMC) expansion initiative.

The project involves the development of a general hospital to replace the existing King Hussein Medical Centre in Amman.
