MEP Awards 2017: Motiongate wins project of the year
Aurecon won the GCC Project of the Year award for the Motiongate Dubai project
Aurecon won the GCC Project of the Year award for the Motiongate Dubai project.
The Motiongate project is a Hollywood-inspired theme park located in Dubai Parks and Resorts, Dubai, showcasing themed areas and attractions based on DreamWorks Animation, Columbia Pictures, and Lionsgate.
Innovative mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) solutions developed by Aurecon, enable visitors to be fully immersed in the Hollywood experience.
Aurecon partnered with Gensler on the design for Motiongate Dubai in January 2014. Motiongate was designed to comply with the newly-introduced Dubai Green Buildings Regulations, despite the regulations not having been developed specifically for a theme park.
Aurecon, in consultation with Dubai Municipality representatives, developed and implemented several best practice MEP features for the park, including solar thermal installations in areas of high hot water usage, shading, misting fans and solar reflective services to improve microclimate conditions, exterior insulation and finish system (EIFS) insulation on the building exterior to achieve building envelope thermal properties, needed in the desert climate, among other things.
One of the judges said about the project, “multiple interesting MEP features make this project unique”.
Talking about the win was Mark Davies, technical director, MEP at Aurecon, who said: “The was a lot of toil and effort [to execute Motiongate]. But if you can’t enjoy something like Motiongate with the fun that comes with it, then you will never enjoy engineering.”
