Abu Dhabi to get more running and cycling tracks

Abu Dhabi City Municipality aims to bring the total length of running and cycling tracks in the UAE capital to 86,996 longitudinal metres

The Department of Urban Planning and Municipalities at Abu Dhabi City Municipality (ADM) has announced plans to extend the scope of the UAE capital’s running and cycling tracks.

The aim is to bring the total length of the routes covered by the tracks to 86,996 longitudinal metres, according to UAE state news agency, WAM.

ADM has reportedly developed the plan for the running and cycling lanes, with part of plan already completed. The rest of the plan is expected to complete over the next five years.

At the moment, Abu Dhabi Island has 22 walks and cycling tracks in areas like Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street, Arabian Gulf Street, and King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Street.

Meanwhile, in the Mainland, there are five walks and cycling lanes in Khalifa City, Mohammed bin Zayed City, Shakhbout City, Al Raha Beach, and Al Falah City.

To ensure the safety and security of the users of the tracks, ADM noted that specialists overseeing the construction of the project have studied practices not only within the UAE but also outside the country.

Moreover, consideration is being given to the specifications and standards in the design and construction of the tracks, including making use of high-quality rubber and other materials, and providing safe crossing areas in sections that intersect with entry and exit points of roads.

ADM is also planning to enhance the appearance of the surrounding areas of the running and cycling tracks through landscaping, WAM added.
