The Mohammed bin Rashid (MBR) Library currently under construction in Dubai’s Al Jaddaf area is designed to meet two green building rating systems.

ASGC, the main contractor of the project, told Construction Week that the library aims to achieve platinum ratings under LEED and Dubai Municipality’s Al Sa’fat.

“Both systems focus on creating an energy- and water-efficient building using sustainable materials to create optimal interior spaces,” said Sameh Samy, project director at ASGC.

“The library utilises passive design measures, such as high-performance opaque envelope with a U-value of 0.1 W/m2K, high-performance glazing, smart glass that changes its thermal properties, and external shading devices.”

Smart glass, according to Samy, functions as a “tintable” electronic glazing that comes with automated daylight control. This control can be programmed or overridden, he noted.

“In addition, optimised mechanical equipment has been procured to significantly reduce the energy consumption of the building, including a water-cooled chiller with a COP of 6.5,” he added.

A project of Dubai Municipality, the MBR Library is now 22% complete, according to ASGC.

ASGC was recently named Contractor of the Year at the Construction Week Awards 2017.
