Construction Week visited the construction site of the Mohammed bin Rashid (MBR) Library in Dubai and spoke with ASGC to see how work on the $272.3m (AED1bn) project is progressing.
Awarded the main contract, worth $245m (AED900m), ASGC commenced construction of the library in October 2016 and aims to complete it in 2018.
According to Sameh Samy, project director at ASGC, closing the envelope was among the biggest challenges the company faced while working on the library. To address this challenge, a detailed mission statement was created to help ASGC coordinate with the different subcontractors involved in the project, he revealed.
Launched in February last year by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in support of President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s declaration of 2016 as the Year of Reading, the MBR Library is being developed by Dubai Municipality. It will house more than 4.5 million books when it opens next year.
