The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has installed smart monitoring devices in more than 5,000 heavy vehicles, it has been revealed.

The devices will allow for the remote detection of inappropriate driver behaviour and vehicle faults, RTA said in a statement.

According to the authority, the installation of remote monitoring devices is mandatory for all companies operating trucks exceeding 20 years in service.

Mohammed Nabhan, director of monitoring and enforcement at RTA’s Licensing Agency, noted that the devices are linked to RTA’s Smart Monitoring Centre, and that they are designed to monitor the conduct of drivers to “ensure their compliance with traffic rules”, as well as detect any defect or damage to the vehicles.

The initiative is expected to “improve road safety, and save lives and properties,” said Nabhan.

“The initial phase of installation of these devices targets trucks that have been in service for 20 years or more. The second phase, which will be kicked off in August this year, will target trucks in service for 15 years or more. The third phase, planned for August 2019, will target trucks that have been in service for 14 years or less.”

He added: “Faults detected by the device include vehicle collision, driving without displaying identification badge, exceeding the speed limits, sudden braking, driving in restricted areas, driving for long hours, dangerous acceleration, sudden swerving, driving during prohibited timing, and vehicle overturn.”
