The Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) and the Department of Transport (DoT) – Abu Dhabi have signed an agreement to collaborate in the study, testing, and evaluation of sustainable, electrical, and autonomous transport technologies.

Under the agreement, the two entities will partner to develop projects that will promote local capacity building, in addition to implementing infrastructure for the testing of smart, electrical, and driverless transportation systems.

Commenting on the partnership, Khalifa Mohamed Al Mazrouei, under-secretary of the Department of Transport, said: “The Department of Transport is continuously working to motivate the public to move towards the use of environmentally friendly vehicles in order to further boost the quality of life in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

"Masdar is committed to the commercial development of sustainable transport infrastructure and Masdar City in Abu Dhabi is at the heart of the emerging trend in sustainable mobility."

Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, chief executive officer of Masdar, added: "This partnership will help to identify innovative technologies that may be potentially developed at scale, complementing the larger sustainable transport strategy of Abu Dhabi."

The agreement was signed at the recently concluded Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, which was hosted by Masdar.

During the event, Masdar revealed plans of extending its Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system, launched in 2010. The extension will feature autonomous vehicles supplied by France’s Navya, UAE state news agency, WAM, reported.
