Jensen Hughes: Official release of updated UAE fire code imminent

The UAE Fire and Life Safety Code 2017 may see an official release within the first quarter of 2018, according to the vice president of development for the Middle East at Jensen Hughes

The updated UAE Fire and Life Safety Code may see an official release within the first quarter of 2018, according to the vice president of development for the Middle East at Jensen Hughes.

“The official release should be this year, possibly in March,” Shamim Rashid-Sumar told Construction Week.

“The 2017 draft of the fire code has been available for public comment for some time. The process for the fire code revision was very much inclusive, and […] involved many community members.”

She noted that members of the fire code committee “were invited to provide comments as the chapters were being revised”, describing the process as “collaborative”.

Although the code, which was launched at the Intersec 2017 exhibition, has yet to be officially released, Sumar revealed that enforcement is already being carried out.

“The Civil Defence is already enforcing many of the revised provisions to ensure compliance with ethical practices, and are not waiting for the official release,” she explained. “Therefore, designers must be knowledgeable of and adhere to the new rules.”
