SageGlass to be installed in Dubai’s $272m MBR Library project
SageGlass can be programmed to tint automatically, in response to the sun, or controlled manually via a smartphone application
SageGlass has announced that its eponymous smart electrochromic glass technology is set to be installed in Dubai Municipality’s $272.3m (AED1bn) Mohammed bin Rashid (MBR) Library project.
The use of smart glass in the library was first revealed to Construction Week (CW) by ASGC, the main contractor of the project, in December 2017.
Sameh Samy, project director at ASGC, had told CW: “The library utilises passive design measures, such as high-performance opaque envelope with a U-value of 0.1 W/m2K, high-performance glazing, smart glass that changes its thermal properties, and external shading devices.”
According to SageGlass, the product is designed to create a comfortable interior environment by controlling daylight, glare, and heat.
It will comprise 72% of the project’s total glass elevation, and will be installed by architectural façade and glazing specialist, JML.
The company noted in a statement that its smart glass technology can be programmed to tint automatically, in response to the sun, or controlled manually via a smartphone application.
With the ability to block heat and glare without the use of blinds or shades, SageGlass preserves views of the outdoors, the company added.
“The Mohammed bin Rashid Library will welcome millions of visitors annually, and people will spend extended periods of time inside the building,” said Samy.
“SageGlass will tint automatically to achieve the desired amount of shading inside the library, but it can also be manually changed through the mobile app if more or less shading is needed in a particular area, depending on the activities or presentations planned.”
Located in Al Jaddaf, the library will boast eight specialised libraries and more than 1.5 million printed books, two million digital books, and one million audio books, as well as conference and study rooms, exhibition areas, a 544-seat auditorium, a café, and parking spaces.
