Cargo operations at new Muscat airport to begin 19 March
Delivery of goods from the current cargo terminal will continue until 29 March, after which all cargo activity will be transferred to the new terminal
Oman’s Ministry of Transport and Communications has announced that the cargo terminal of the new Muscat International Airport will become operational starting 2.00 p.m. on 19 March, 2018.
According to the ministry, the terminal will only start receiving goods on the mentioned date.
Meanwhile, delivery of goods from the current cargo terminal will continue until 29 March, after which all cargo activity will be transferred to the new terminal.
The notice from the ministry follows an announcement made earlier this month that the airport’s new passenger terminal, originally scheduled to open in 2014, will commence commercial operations on 20 March.
In a statement to state-owned Oman News Agency (ONA), the Ministry of Transport and Communications revealed that it is coordinating with the Oman Aviation Services Company and all aviation stakeholders to transport freight and cargo from the current building and start operating the new cargo building, which is located next to the new passenger terminal.
Construction of the cargo terminal has reportedly been completed, with only a few tests left to be carried out.
Spanning 32,000m2, the cargo building consists of a 23,000m2 warehouse boasting an operational capacity of 317,515t, which could be expanded to 453,592t.
Oman Aviation Services will operate the cargo traffic at the airport as part of a plan to develop cargo services and increase the efficiency of the country’s freight industry, ONA reported.
