Abu Dhabi, Ajman agree joint work on Estidama
Abu Dhabi and Ajman have inked a deal to cooperate on the implementation of the Estidama sustainable building programme
Local government bodies from Abu Dhabi and Ajman have agreed to work together to implement the Estidama sustainable construction programme.
The Ajman Municipality and Planning Department and the Department of Urban Planning and Municipalities in Abu Dhabi, will work together on the Estidama sustainable building project. The two bodies signed a cooperation agreement on 7 March at the end of the Ajman’s fifth International Environment Conference, which was held at Ajman University.
It is unclear how the two local government departments will work closer together to implement Estidama, and no details beyond the signing of the agreement have been disclosed. Neither could be reached for comment at the time of writing.
Estidama is a programme of building and urban communities in Abu Dhabi and includes the development of green construction guidelines for residential and commercial property. It covers aspects such as energy, water, pollution, building materials, and land use. It is one string of Abu Dhabi Vision 2030.
It is not, however, a green building rating system. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and BREEAM are among the sustainable certification bodies.
Separately, Sharjah Urban Planning Council (SUPC) meet with the Al Rahmaniyah District Council this week to discuss developing an urban planning strategy to achieve sustainable building goals.
SUPC’s secretary general, Khalid Al Ali, said it was “essential’ to “develop integrated plans and strategies” to improve the suburbs of Sharjah.
SUPC wants to bolster cooperation among a host of local government departments in the emirate to ensure facilities such as schools, nurseries, medical clinics, petrol stations, and leisure outlets are available for citizens in urban parts of Sharjah. If areas are found to not have these services, projects to build schools or medical centres, for example, could be launched.
