The UAE’s Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation has announced the inauguration of Yemen’s Hawlaf Port, located in the Governorate of Socotra.

The inauguration of the facility follows the completion of development works, including the enlargement of the berth by 110m, as well the installation of perimeter fences, lighting, pavements, and a mobile crane with a 100t capacity.

The expansion of the governorate’s only port is expected to promote maritime commerce in Socotra, in addition to easing delays in the unloading of cargo and allowing for the accommodation of ships of different sizes, UAE state news agency, WAM, reported.

Expansion works on the port were completed in just over a year, a spokesperson of the foundation told WAM.

The port’s inauguration also saw the announcement of the deployment of its customs department and a new working plan designed to help boost the port’s activities.

The plan includes the provision of space outside the port’s berth, to be used for the sorting and delivery of goods, the foundation added.
