Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower) is set to upgrade its district cooling plant in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) neighbourhood.

Following the expansion, Empower said, the DIFC facility will be among the largest operational district cooling plants in the region.

Ahmad Bin Shafar, chief executive officer (CEO) of Empower, said the $16.3m (AED60m) project will be carried out in response to "the continuous demand for district cooling services" provided by the company.

The DIFC district cooling plant currently operates at a cooling capacity of 43,000 tonnes of refrigeration (TR), and the expansion will raise it to 62,000 TR.

Empower will add six units of Trane's EcoWise Centrifugal Chillers, each of which has a capacity of 3,150 TR.

Trane is a subsidiary of Ingersoll Rand, which has designed the EcoWise portfolio with the aim of reducing its environmental impact, particularly through the inclusion of refrigerants that have low global warming potential (GWP).

Bin Shafar said the upgrade project would help the DIFC plant to boost the energy efficiency of its connecting infrastructure and buildings, WAM reported.
