The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries has unveiled the first model of a refrigerated fish truck, as part of its Small Truck Support Project.

Designed for fish products weighing less than three tons, the project was financed by the Agricultural and Fisheries Development Fund, Oman News Agency (ONA) reported.

The project aims to draw attention to the importance of using refrigerated containers in fish trucks to maintain the quality of fishery products and comes under the country’s Improvement of the Cooling Chain Infrastructure initiative, within its National Program for Enhancing Economic Diversification (Tanfeedh).

Hamad bin Said Al-Oufi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, said that the ministry is seeking to develop the fish sector by implementing a number of projects and initiatives that reflect the increase in fish production in the sultanate.

He added the ministry has carried out improvement and rehabilitation works on existing fish market infrastructure, as well as developing new markets and legislation to facilitate investment in the sector.

According to Al-Oufi, the number of fish transport vehicles in Oman currently stands at 4,000. Of these, only 222 or 6% are equipped with refrigerators, which he said shows how beneficial the project would be to the fish transport sector.

The first batch will consist of 41 vehicles to be used for transporting and marketing fish products.
