Expo 2020 Dubai recently hosted the first event in a series of leadership sessions to promote health, safety, quality, and environment (HSQE).

The on-site team of Expo 2020 Dubai is currently 15,000-strong – with 14.5 million work hours logged so far – and at peak, construction workers on the 4.38km2 site will number 35,000.

Construction contractors, sub-contractors, project managers, regulators, and partners attended Expo 2020 Dubai's event.

Topics covered during the session covered a wide range of topics related to health and safety.

Ahmed Al Khatib, Expo 2020 Dubai’s senior vice president for real estate and delivery, told the conference that the health and safety of all workers on the site was a joint responsibility.

He added: "This is about our collective commitment to do the right thing and to demonstrate leadership to all our teams to make sure the high standards Expo 2020 has set are enforced across the project.

"The scale of the challenge facing us will grow greater and it is up to all of us to meet that challenge head on and to succeed."

Tony Aikenhead, chief infrastructure and delivery officer at Expo 2020 Dubai, added: "This is about providing leadership and a collective commitment to ensure that the high standards we have set at Expo 2020 are achieved.

Commenting during the event, Al Jamal said: "This is a team effort as we build on the work that we at Dubai Police has already achieved with Expo 2020 in ensuring the safety of workers on the site.

"This has also been done in collaboration with MOHRE, Dubai Municipality, and many others.

“We are all in this together, supporting a global event that is of such major importance to Dubai and the UAE. We are all proud to be making this contribution."

UAE-based companies – including Al-Futtaim Carillion, Khansaheb, Orascom Besix, Arabtec, ALEC Engineering and Contracting, Tristar Engineering, and Al Naboodah Construction – are playing a key role in Expo 2020 Dubai's construction scheme.

Shell and core construction will complete a year before Expo 2020 Dubai opens on 20 October, 2020.

All major design elements for the project are complete, the last of which is the Al Wasl Plaza, a 150m-wide, 67.5m-tall domed space, which is one of the buildings Laing O'Rourke is developing.

Additionally, external cladding work on the three theme pavilions has begun, and will be completed by the end of this year.
