CCD Design and Ergonomics has been chosen by Etihad Aviation Group to design and create four control rooms at the upcoming Midfield Terminal at Abu Dhabi International Airport.

CCD, which was picked following a competitive tender and selection process, will work closely with Etihad’s team to design functional and efficient control rooms, according to Aviation Business.

Its scope of work will include a full set of design services covering feasibility, requirements capture, tender support, as well as construction supervision.

The specialist design consultancy will also head up furniture design, room layout and interior design, which it will work closely with companies such as Hoare Lea on MEP services, Faithful + Gould on cost consultancy and Sutton Vane Associates on lighting design.

Currently, the aviation group is utilising a temporary hub control room, where it has been evaluating several design layouts.

David Watts, CCD’s managing director, said: “We will be designing four control rooms for Etihad – a joint control room for the network and hub operations, a terminal control room, a baggage control room and a ramp operations control room.”

He added: “Together they ensure the smooth delivery of passenger-side operations, ensuring passengers make connections and stay synchronised with their luggage.

"Etihad has already seen in their existing control rooms how the impact of small changes in layout can improve operational efficiency and they want to replicate that success in these new rooms.”

To date, CDC has designed more than three hundred control rooms across the globe. Recent projects include the terminal control room for Heathrow T2 and the En Route ATC centre for NATS.
