2,000-strong team to clean Dubai during Ramadan 2018

Dubai Municipality (DM) has revealed details of its waste management strategy for the Holy Month of Ramadan.
DM’s Waste Management Department will deploy a team comprising 2,200 workers, as well as increase its sweeping equipment fleet, to manage waste generated in the city during the month.
Awareness initiatives to encourage the reduction of waste have also been prepared.
During Ramadan, the DM waste department will focus on the cleanliness of highways, as well as water assets, such as Dubai Creek, Jaddaf Creek, Business Bay Canal, Dubai Water Canal, and Deira Harbour Canal.
DM’s waste disposal site at Al Qusais will operate round-the-clock on all days of the week, with four work shifts assigned for the site, while the Al Badyada Dump, allocated for construction waste, will operate in two shifts – 5am to 5pm, and 9pm to 5am.
Work at DM’s Medical Waste Treatment Plant and Hazardous Waste Facility will be carried out between 7am and 5pm.
The Habbab and Warsan dumps will be serviced between 5am and 12pm throughout the Holy Month, except on Fridays.
Eng Abdulmajeed Sifai, director of DM’s Waste Management Department, said 242 additional garbage baskets have been distributed near mosques in the city, as well as venues where Ramadan events and iftar tents have been set up.
He continued: “In addition, we have formed an emergency team, consisting of 12 supervisory and regulatory staff, 65 cleaners prepared with the necessary safety equipment and tools, and 37 different mechanisms and equipment for the collection and transfer of waste.”
Sifai said the initiatives would help to immediately handle public communication and complaints, especially during iftar hours.
DM’s awareness campaign includes the ‘Shop Smartly And Reduce Your Waste’ initiative, which will be carried out in conjunction with the Lulu Hypermarket chain and other private-sector companies.
The campaign is aimed at encouraging shoppers to reduce waste by using paper bags instead of plastic bags, reusing household items where possible, and following proper waste segregation practices at home, Sifai explained.
