Oman builds emergency road to cope with Cyclone Mekuna damage

Engineers from Oman's Ministry of Defence have built an emergency road to a bridge in Al Mughsail after Cyclone Mekuna caused extensive damage to regional infrastructure. 

The Ministry of Defence's Engineering Service completed the alternative road on Monday, 28 May.

It will provide a route to a bridge in Al Mughsail that connects the Wilayat of Salalah in the western region of the Governorate of Dhofar.

Oman Daily Observer said Cyclone Mekuna caused significant damage to roads and bridges in the region.

Oman's Ministry of Defence and the Sultan Armed Forces (SAF) are rebuilding and repairing the country's infrastructure, some of which was hit hard by the tropical Cyclone Mekuna.

Electric power generators and water suction equipment has been supplied to local workers by the Ministry of Defence's Engineering Service as well.

Numerous companies in Oman have been badly affected by the strong wind and rain brought by Cyclone Mekuna.

Raysut Cement has been forced to halted production for up to 10 days after its factories and stockyard became waterlogged.

Hilton Salalah Resort has closed until further notice after the storm caused external damage to the four-star hotel.

Sembcorp Salalah Power and Water Company has also had to "temporarily shut down" its water plant as a result of the storm.
