Video: Construction Week In Focus | Crane safety in Saudi Arabia

S02E04 of Construction Week's weekly YouTube bulletin explores how simulators are being combined with traditional training methods to boost operator safety in the kingdom

Is technology the most effective way to improve crane safety in Saudi Arabia? It appears that the kingdom's equipment sector, like all other global industries, is set to be disrupted by emerging technologies.

Last month, a mobile winch crane collapsed at the Makkah Grand Mosque in Saudi Arabia, where three years ago, a crawler crane had toppled over as well. No fatalities were recorded following the crash last month, but what are stakeholders in Saudi doing to improve crane safety in the local construction sector?

As Dennis Daniel, editor of PMV Middle East, tells Oscar Rousseau, deputy editor of Construction Week in this video, cranes are not designed to crash, so the human element of using cranes is important.

Staff training should be the major priority, and rightly, numerous companies are taking initiatives in this direction. For instance, NFT and Manitowoc recently took their Safety First campaign to Saudi. As part of the programme, NFT and Manitowoc professionals also met with contractors working on Riyadh Metro

Simulators are also playing a huge role in improving operator training and awareness. Companies such as CM Labs, AMCS, and Serious Labs have all developed simulators to help crane users, among other equipment operators.

In the fourth episode of Construction Week In Focus's second season, Daniel and Rousseau discuss how technology is increasing the scope for crane operator safety in the kingdom.
