The 1,347m² Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) Grand Mosque is set to open in 2019.

DIFC Grand Mosque will have space for 500 worshipers at the $1bn (AED3.6bn) Gate Avenue development in the city.

The mosque has been designed to form a cube within a cube, matching the design of DIFC's landmark structure, the Gate Building.

Spanning across 5.5ha of built up area, Gate Avenue, where the DIFC Grand Mosque is located, will link the podium levels of all buildings in DIFC, from the Gate Building to Central Park Towers.

It will have more than 200 restaurants, shops, and entertainment options, as well as the DIFC Grand Mosque, which draws on modern Arabic design.

Comment on the progress of the mosque, chief executive officer of DIFC Authority, Arif Amiri, said: “The DIFC master plan continues to introduce state-of-the-art, urban architecture that is designed to enrich the experience of our growing community of professionals, residents and visitors alike.

"DIFC Grand Mosque, together with the broader world-class offering of Gate Avenue, mark an important addition to the interconnected ecosystem we have at DIFC, and bring a new dimension to the attractive infrastructure we have in place.”

The interior of the mosque features an expansive main chandelier inspired by traditional muqarnas, a type of decorative vaulting typical in Arabic architecture.

A hanging mashrabiya will provide shade and privacy to certain areas, but also opens out in more public areas. It uses a geometric Islamic design pattern to create different-sized openings.
