Oman-headquartered Bahwan Engineering Company’s C K Khanna features in the 2018 Construction Week Power 100, marking his debut in the annual ranking.

Khanna, general manager of Bahwan Engineering’s corporate division, reports directly to the conglomerate’s vice chairman. He has been Bahwan Engineering for 35 years, of which 15 have been in his current role.

The privately held company’s average annual turnover ranges between $700m and $800m (OMR270m to OMR308m), and Khanna said the firm currently “has a healthy order book”, with approximately a year’s worth of work already secured and under execution.

Including full-time qualified engineers, unskilled labourers, and women employees, Khanna oversees a workforce of 1,250 staff, and drives the company’s training and development initiatives as well. Last year, these activities focused on topics such as general safety and car maintenance, and email etiquette. This year, the firm’s training initiatives will cover young Omani mentoring, work ethics, supply chain management, and productivity-boosting measures.

As one of Oman’s oldest engineering firms, Bahwan Engineering’s project portfolio comprises numerous high-profile projects completed and under way in the sultanate and beyond. Between June 2017 and May 2018, the company was involved with the Muscat International Airport scheme, completed this March.

Through a $750m (OMR289m) contract, Bahwan delivered mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) work for two packages of the facility’s passenger terminal building and airport infrastructure utilities. Bahwan was part of the team that collected Construction Week Oman Awards 2018’s title of Infrastructure Project of the Year for the Muscat International Airport.

Bahwan was also involved with the Ruwais Refinery project in Abu Dhabi, completed in December 2017. The company delivered project management, supervision, and mechanical, structural, and piping installation works for the project.

Between now and May 2019, the company will work on the Mall of Oman in Muscat, where it is delivering MEP services for the facility. The firm is also carrying out civil work for the Liwa Plastics petrochemicals complex, and through an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract, it is working on a power plant in Saih Rawi for Petroleum Development Oman (PDO).

Khanna listed Oman, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi as Bahwan Engineering’s most important regional markets in 2018, adding that the construction of Duqm Refinery, and hospital projects in the sultanate, would be key opportunities for the company in the next 12 months.

Commenting on key market challenges to watch out for during the same period, he added: “The construction industry is going through a very volatile and challenging market situation.

“In view of the economic downturn, the challenge is to identify the right opportunities in a competitive environment, retain skilled manpower, and manage cash-flows to minimise the financial burden.”

The 2018 Construction Week Power 100 is the annual ranking of the Middle East’s most influential construction leaders, and will be revealed across Construction Week’s print, digital, and video channels by 30 June.
