A ‘smart’ housing system developed by Sharjah will be rolled out for contractors and consultants in 2019, it has been confirmed.

Sharjah Department of Housing launched Phase 1 of the Smart Housing Application this year amid efforts to implement an “intelligent transformation” of its operations. The app is aimed to deliver residential support, including information related to housing services.

In 2019, Phase 2 of the app will target construction contractors and consultants, as well as incorporate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology.

Khalifa Al Tunaiji, chairman of Sharjah Department of Housing, said the app would link clients and his department. It would also provide information to clients regarding residential project support, “from signing the contract with the contractor to the final […] stage”.

The housing department’s website saw 2,507 projects submitted online in 2017, with 208 requests made so far this year.

These details were revealed during a meeting of the Sharjah Executive Council (SEC) on 19 June.

The meeting was chaired by HH Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, and Chairman of SEC. HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Salem bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Deputy Chairman of SEC, attended the session as well.

SEC’s meeting also revealed that Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority’s (RTA) Al Montazah Street development project is 52% complete.

Building approvals processes are rapidly being digitised as the UAE seeks the creation of tech-savvy industries.

In 2016, Abu Dhabi City Municipality (ADM) compiled and launched a platform that allows submittal of roads layout data standards using geographic information systems (GIS).

The team of the Municipal Infrastructure and Assets Sector, and ADM's Spatial Data Division, developed the service, which allows contractors and consultants to submit layouts data through the GIS.

Meanwhile, Dubai Municipality’s smart services include the Smart Decision Maker’s Reports, a smart reporting screen that includes project status and statistics, including data analysis results; the Dubai Municipality Project Administration System, an electronic map that displays all of the Dubai Government’s projects which are presented, followed up on, and updated directly by the authority concerned with implementation; and the Dubai Buildings Maintenance System, which displays data about the state of the building, buildings licenses, and the mechanism to display the structures that must be maintained. The system can determine periodicity of the data according to predefined criteria.
