Dubai’s Latifa Hospital for Women and Children is set to double capacity under plans announced to expand its emergency department, and labour and delivery suite.

The planned expansion, announced in a statement by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) on Thursday, will see the first phase of the emergency department, as well as the expansion of the labour and delivery suite, complete by September 2019.

The second phase of the emergency department’s expansion will complete by March 2020, doubling the number of patients that can be catered for – from 30,000 to 60,000.

DHA said the total cost of the project stood at $27.2m (AED100m), explaining the new emergency department will have a “green and child-friendly theme to create a positive patient and family centric environment” that is in-line with international modern practices.

Speaking the expansion of the Labour suite, the hospital’s CEO, Dr Muna Tahlak, said: “The design is such that it will enhance accessibility, safety and delivery of service of service. The expansion will not only increase capacity but it will also improve patient flow procedures, minimise patient transfers from one location to another and enhance overall care.”

A centralised patient placement centre is part of the group’s strategic patient flow plan.

Dr Tahlak said: “From the time the patient enters the hospital until discharge, we have designed the expansion in such a manner that all processes take place next to each other creating an easy flow and minimising patient movement.”

She added two more operation theatre rooms will be added, increasing the number to six.

The news comes nearly a year after DHA announced its expansion plans for Latifa Hospital and Hatta Hospital, stating at the time it would also expand a number of its health centres – specifically those in Umm Seqeim, Al Qusais, and Abu Hail.
