Two men have "tragically died" after an accident at one of Emirates Global Aluminum's (EGA) smelting furnaces in Jebel Ali, Dubai.

The two men – whose names, nationalities, and ages were not disclosed – died on Monday, 13 August, during "routine maintenance" work at an industrial furnace that was not operational at the time of the fatal accident, EGA said.

An investigation in the accident is now under way by the aluminium smelting giant to understand the incident's cause.

In a statement EGA said the two men were "working at an industrial furnace, which was shut down for routine maintenance and was not operational at the time".

The company, which has offices in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai, said its emergency response protocol was immediately triggered after the accident. Emergency response teams and relevant authorities in Dubai were informed and have been providing support to the Jebel Ali site.

"EGA is offering the men’s families every possible support at this tragic time," the company said in a statement.
