SSH chases major 'green' accreditation for OCEC project's third phase
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Accreditation from the Green Building Council in the US cement's the OCEC project's sustainability credentials
Architecture and design firm SSH has been commissioned by the Oman Tourism Development Company to win a major green and sustainable building accreditation for the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre (OCEC) project which has entered its third phase.
In a statement, SSH said it is seeking Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Accreditation for Package Three, the ‘Convention Centre' portion of the OCEC project.
Package Two of the OCEC project, which completed in 2016, was officially accredited with the distinction from the US's Green Building Council in 2017.
LEED certification is official recognition that a project complies with the requirements prescribed within the Counsils’ LEED rating systems, which evaluates the environmental performance of a building and encourages market transformation toward sustainable design.
SSH said such certification "cements the building design’s sustainability credentials".
The system is credit-based, allowing projects to earn points for environmentally-friendly actions taken during construction and use of a building.
The convention centre aspect of the project includes a 3,200-seat lyric-style theatre, a second 450-seat auditorium, as well as 19 meeting rooms with full AV installations. A grand ballroom with 1,200-seat banquet capacity and a Junior Ballroom with 540-seat banquet capacity will also feature, alongside a food court, and associated back-of-house facilities.
SSH’s resident director of Oman, Danny Warde, said: "We have always promoted the seamless integration of all design elements, including structural materials, mechanical and electrical systems, interior finishes and landscape features.
"It was, therefore, crucial to us that all these elements are interwoven into the architectural fabric of this particular project to provide our clients with beautifully balanced architecture and a sustainable, cost-effective building.”
OCEC is the first significant venture for Oman into the meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions markets, acting as a gateway to Muscat with the aim of driving growth in the country’s tourism sector, as well as engagement from the local community.
