What are the main challenges facing the construction industry in 2018?
Adopting new technologies and looking towards the future, but doing so in a sustainable way that meets budgetary restrictions, is one of the major market challenges. Another hurdle is to find better methods to guarantee the safety of the entire workforce without compromising on deadlines. Establishing best practice for reducing financial disputes is also a challenge, and can be mitigated by introducing industry standards for document control.
What excites you most about the UAE construction industry in 2018?
Designers are not afraid to aim high with bold designs and advances unseen elsewhere in the world. The upcoming Expo 2020 Dubai looks set to be a fantastic showcase for what the city and the UAE are capable of. We anticipate a stronger tourism economy in the UAE going forward, which will have a positive effect on the construction projects that are greenlit. The peak of construction in the UAE may be some time away, but in the meantime, it will be a very exciting sector to be a part of.
What topics do you expect will be discussed at the CW: Leaders in Construction Summit UAE 2018?
Some topics I expect to hear about are the current disputes and challenges abound in the industry, as well as the impact that the introduction of value-added tax (VAT) has had on the market. We expect that smart technologies and infrastructure will be discussed, and recommendations will be made on how to best implement new ideas without damaging budget forecasts. We also anticipate that economic diversification in the UAE and elsewhere in the Middle East will be discussed.
