Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded two contracts, worth $171m (AED630m), for the final road works related to Expo 2020 Dubai.

RTA has awarded the Phase 5 and 6 contracts that are the last ones under the authority's scope to improve roads connecting Expo 2020 Dubai, according to WAM.

The contracts come after HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, issued a directive to accelerate road and transport infrastructure work.

Improvements to Jebel Ali-Lehbab Road and the intersection between Emirates Road and Jebel Ali-Lehbab Road will be made under the final two phases.

Phase 5 will see bridges stretching 2.6km and a 3km road built, and Jebel Ali-Lehbab Road will have its lane capacity doubled from three to six over a 3km stretch.

Two more bridges will be built to link Jebel Ali-Lehbab Road with a 1km service road to improve two-way traffic at the expo.

Bridges extending 1.4km and roads stretching 8km will be built under Phase 6, which will also see the lanes of Jebel Ali-Lehbab Road increased from four to six in both directions, over a length of 3km.

A 5km-long upgrade for Emirates Road will also be launched under the final phase.

The roundabout at the junction for Emirates Road and Jebel Ali-Lehbab Road will be turned into a flyover to ease traffic flow as part of RTA's final road-improvement work.

Jebel Ali-Lehbab Road will be turned into a eight-lane bridge, with a two-line service road built on both sides.

Mattar Al Tayer, director-general and chairman of RTA's board of executive directors, called the road improvements “one of the big projects currently undertaken by RTA to serve the needs of the Expo 2020 in Dubai”.
