UAE companies win $4bn contracts for Barakah nuclear energy project
More than 1,500 local companies are involved with the landmark project, Enec said
More than 1,500 local companies have been awarded contracts worth $3.8bn (AED14bn) to date for Abu Dhabi’s Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, operator Nawah Energy Company revealed. This list includes firms such as Emirates Steel, National Cement, Dubai Cable Company, National Marine Dredging Company, Western Bainoona Group, and Hilalco.
Nawah revealed these details at Supplier Forum, a conference it held in the UAE capital. The is part of Nawah’s strategy to support the growth of a local supply chain that can meet the operational service, spare part, and consumable needs of Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant’s construction and operations for at least the next 60 years.
Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec), the parent company of Nawah, has dedicated its industrial development team to working with these firms and ensuring their standards meet nuclear energy project requirements.
According to a statement by Enec, this has resulted in “new contracts with Enec and its subsidiaries” for the local firms, as well as “created opportunities to broaden their customer base by entering the international market for supplying goods and services to the global nuclear industry”.
Commenting on the forum, Eng Mohamed Al Hammadi, chief executive officer of Enec, said: “The UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program is already supporting many strategic sectors through the enhancement of local businesses, the development of new industries, and the creation of high-value jobs.
“Through this forum we hope to continue to enhance our relationships with key suppliers and share upcoming opportunities with both local and international companies.
“By supporting the growth and development of a local supply chain, Enec is not only ensuring the future sustainability of the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program, but contributing to the UAE’s economic diversification and transition to a knowledge-based economy, in line with the Abu Dhabi Plan.”
Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant is the largest nuclear energy new build in the world, with four APR-1400 units under simultaneous construction.
