Construction Week Viewpoint tackles cash flow and dispute resolution.

In the latest Construction Week Viewpoint podcast episode, Ciaran McCormack, regional director for the Middle East at global construction consultancy Linesight, shares his insights on the nature of disputes in region’s construction industry, a consultant’s ever-shifting role in alleviating problems, as well as Linesight's plans as it eyes growth opportunities in key regional markets like Saudi Arabia.

In conversation with Jack Ball, senior reporter at Construction Week, McCormack notes that construction by its very nature is a “conflict industry”, and touches on the role of consultancies in driving honest and transparent engagement between parties, ensuring clarity and removing ambiguity wherever possible.

“We try to remove as much of the grey areas as we can. There’s a lot of risk that contracts can impose on contractors so you need to be clear about and give them a fighting chance so they can see what they’re signing up to.”

Abortive work was another topic of discussion, with McCormack touting the need for “informed decisions regarding cost” and early client engagement, as well as cash flow issues and its effects on the quality and number of contractors currently in the market.

He goes on to discuss opportunities he sees for the consultancy looking ahead, particularly in Saudi Arabia, noting the firm is already involved in a "number of the larger masterplans" against a backdrop of the kingdom’s ambitious Vision 2030.

Oman too is on the consultancy’s “radar”, with it only being a “matter of time” before, he believes, Linesight will invest in the sultanate.
